Hospitality Internships in Europe & the USA

Piktalent organises Erasmus+ hospitality and tourism internships in hotels, restaurants, event venues and travel companies. Placements span boutique 4★ properties, international hotel chains, gastronomic restaurants and event production studios — matched to the participant's department: front of house, F&B, kitchen, events, sales or revenue. Unlike a one-department internship, Piktalent hospitality mobilities typically rotate interns across 2–3 departments over 480–960 supervised hours, producing a competency-based evaluation rather than a single narrow reference.

    What is a hospitality internship?

A hospitality internship is an operational placement inside a hotel, restaurant, event venue or travel company where interns rotate through real service shifts under a designated mentor. Erasmus+ hospitality mobilities are particularly common for VET learners, with Learning Agreements built around the EQF/ECVET framework and competency-based assessment.

Independent and recent-graduate placements follow the same model on a self-funded basis. Hospitality interns typically complete 480–960 supervised hours, gain working knowledge of at least one PMS (Opera, Mews, Cloudbeds) or POS system, and leave with a competency-based evaluation and Europass Mobility certificate.

    Decision framework

Is a hospitality internship the right fit?

Hospitality fits when the participant studies tourism, culinary or hotel management — and is ready for shift work and high-season intensity. Switch hubs when the role is more office-based.

    Choose hospitality internships if…

    • Curriculum is hotel management, tourism, culinary, F&B or events.
    • Participant accepts shift work, weekends and physical service environments.
    • Spoken language at B1+ in EN or local language for guest-facing roles.
    Operator's perspective

What an experienced hospitality coordinator actually checks

Hospitality is the field where placement quality is most visible — and where shortcuts hurt the participant first. These are the operational checks we run on every host before confirming.

    Shift pattern transparency before signature

Every hospitality host commits to a written shift pattern in the Learning Agreement (e.g. 5 shifts × 8 hours, max 1 split shift/week, 2 consecutive days off). Without it, working-time disputes during peak season are almost guaranteed.

Accommodation must be walking-distance or staff-shuttled

Resort placements outside city centres only work if the host provides shared staff accommodation or a shuttle. We refuse remote-resort hosts that expect interns to find their own car or 1-hour public-transport links.

Kitchen brigade structure determines learning depth

A culinary intern in a kitchen with a clear brigade (chef de partie + commis structure) learns systematically. A kitchen run by 1 chef + 'helpers' produces hours of repetitive prep with no progression. We screen for brigade structure during host vetting.

Front-office placements need PMS access from day one

Mews, Opera or Cloudbeds access on day 1 is the difference between learning hotel operations and watching them. We require hosts to commit in writing to PMS user provisioning during onboarding.

Tip-pool and gratuity rules must be disclosed up front

In Spain, Portugal and Italy, tip-pool inclusion varies by establishment. We disclose the rule per host so the participant arrives with realistic income expectations on top of the Erasmus+ grant.
