Paid internships and traineeships in the United States on the J-1 Exchange Visitor visa. Piktalent matches you with a vetted U.S. host company, files your DS-7002, secures your DS-2019 from a State Department–designated sponsor, and supports you on the ground in the U.S.
Quick answer
The J-1 USA visa lets European students do a paid internship (up to 12 months) or traineeship (up to 18 months — 24 in hospitality) at a U.S. host company. You need a DS-2019 from a U.S.-designated sponsor, SEVIS I-901 ($220), DS-160 ($185) and a U.S. embassy interview. Piktalent organises the host, paperwork and U.S. support — typical timeline is 8–14 weeks.

+ €300 one-off registration fee applies to every programme, both tracks. It covers file screening, sponsor pre-qualification and the DS-7002 draft — refundable if we cannot match you with a host in your field within 60 days.
Same core placement — insurance and duration caps differ by track.
If your J-1 visa is denied by a U.S. consulate (without any violation on your side) and the DS-2019 is returned, we refund part of your programme fee.
What applies outside a consular visa denial — please read before paying the balance.
Once the host placement is confirmed and accepted, the participant is obliged to complete the programme payment — the matching, sponsor liaison and DS-7002 drafting have already been delivered. Any balance already paid is retained and non-refundable.
Piktalent J-1 USA placements are personalised to the participant's CV, field and interview. A confirmed place cannot be transferred to another candidate.
Violation of the programme's terms and conditions — including sponsor rules, DS-7002 training plan, or host-company code of conduct — can lead to the placement being cancelled by Piktalent with no refund of fees paid.

U.S. State Department-designated sponsors are the only entities that can issue DS-2019, but they don't recruit, match or onboard you. Piktalent does — and it's the same model we've run since 2009 for European mobility.
Real host companies in your field — finance, tech, marketing, hospitality, biotech — matched and pre-interviewed for you, not just a job board.
Joint drafting with a designated J-1 sponsor so your Training/Internship Plan passes sponsor review the first time.
Policy meets all U.S. State Department J-1 minimums (medical, repatriation, evacuation) — added to your file before the embassy interview.
Vetted housing options near your host, SIM + bank-account guidance, and a Piktalent contact reachable during U.S. business hours.
The questions European students ask us most before applying for a J-1 USA placement.
The J-1 USA visa is a U.S. non-immigrant Exchange Visitor visa for non-U.S. citizens taking part in an approved exchange program — internships, traineeships, research, teaching, au pair, summer work-travel or camp counselor placements. Every J-1 program is run by a U.S. Department of State–designated sponsor, who issues the Form DS-2019 used at the embassy interview.
You apply on /apply/j1-usa. Within 3 business days a Piktalent advisor reviews your CV, confirms the right J-1 category and sends a shortlist of 3–6 vetted U.S. hosts in your field. You interview each host, pick one, and sign a placement agreement. Only then do you pay the €300 refundable registration and the track fee.
Both tracks include host-company matching, the DS-7002 Training/Internship Plan, the DS-2019 issued by a U.S. Department of State–designated sponsor, interview coaching and on-the-ground U.S. support. The Hospitality & Tourism track (from €3,300) also bundles health + liability insurance for the full programme. The Business / I.T. / Architecture & Engineering track (from €2,000) bundles liability insurance only — J-1 health insurance is billed separately at $98 – $136 / month.
If the U.S. consulate denies your J-1 with no violation on your side and the DS-2019 is returned to the sponsor, we refund €600 of the programme fee on 2–6 month placements and €700 on 7–12 month placements. Government fees paid to the U.S. authorities (SEVIS $220, DS-160 $185) are not refundable by us.
No. Once the host placement is confirmed and accepted, the participant is obliged to complete the programme payment — matching, sponsor liaison and DS-7002 drafting have already been delivered — and any balance already paid is retained. Substitute participants are not allowed, as each J-1 placement is personalised to the candidate's CV, field and host interview. Violation of the programme's terms and conditions can also lead to the placement being cancelled by Piktalent without a refund.
J-1 Intern: current university students or graduates within 12 months of graduation, placed in a field directly related to their degree. J-1 Trainee: a degree plus 1 year of related work experience, OR 5 years of relevant professional experience without a degree. Both require sufficient English to function in the U.S. workplace and proof of strong ties to the home country.
Plan 8–14 weeks from host match to U.S. arrival: 2–4 weeks for the sponsor to approve DS-7002 and issue DS-2019, then SEVIS I-901 payment, DS-160 submission, and a U.S. embassy interview slot (1–6 weeks depending on country). Piktalent and our J-1 sponsor partners pre-validate the file so the visa-refusal rate stays under 3%.
Piktalent quotes one all-in fee per package. The Hospitality & Tourism track starts at €3,300 with health + liability insurance included. The Business · I.T. · Architecture & Engineering track starts at €2,000 with liability insurance included; J-1 health insurance is billed separately ($98–$136/month). U.S. government fees paid directly to the authorities: SEVIS I-901 = $220 (Intern/Trainee), DS-160 MRV = $185, plus a reciprocity fee that varies by nationality.
Some J-1 categories — especially when the program is government-funded or the field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List for your country — require you to return home for two years before applying for an H-1B, L-1, or U.S. permanent residency. A waiver is sometimes possible. Your DS-2019 and consular stamp will indicate whether 212(e) applies; we flag it during onboarding before you commit.
Yes. J-1 Intern and Trainee placements must be paid at or above the U.S. federal or applicable state minimum wage and follow the Fair Labor Standards Act, under a written Training / Internship Plan (DS-7002). Stipends are common for research roles; au pairs receive a weekly stipend plus room, board and an education allowance.
Yes — they apply for J-2 dependent visas. J-2 spouses can request a USCIS work-authorization (EAD) after arrival in the U.S. J-2 children attend U.S. K-12 schools. The J-1 sponsor adds J-2 dependents to your DS-2019 before the embassy interview.
Sponsors approve programs and issue DS-2019, but they don't find you the host company, negotiate the role, or handle U.S. accommodation. Piktalent does the full placement: vetted host shortlist matched to your field, DS-7002 drafting, U.S. housing, J-1-compliant insurance, embassy file prep, and an on-the-ground point of contact in the U.S. throughout the placement.
Tell us your field, your dates and your home country. We come back within 3 business days with a shortlist of U.S. host companies, your J-1 category, the sponsor we'd pair you with and a full cost quote.
