J-1 Internships in the USA for European Students

The J-1 USA visa is a U.S. non-immigrant Exchange Visitor visa for non-U.S. citizens taking part in an approved exchange program — internships, traineeships, research, teaching, au pair, summer work-travel or camp counselor placements. Every J-1 program is run by a U.S. Department of State–designated sponsor, who issues the Form DS-2019 used at the embassy interview.

You apply on /apply/j1-usa. Within 3 business days a Piktalent advisor reviews your CV, confirms the right J-1 category and sends a shortlist of 3–6 vetted U.S. hosts in your field. You interview each host, pick one, and sign a placement agreement. Only then do you pay the €300 refundable registration and the track fee.

Both tracks include host-company matching, the DS-7002 Training/Internship Plan, the DS-2019 issued by a U.S. Department of State–designated sponsor, interview coaching and on-the-ground U.S. support. The Hospitality & Tourism track (from €3,300) also bundles health + liability insurance for the full programme. The Business / I.T. / Architecture & Engineering track (from €2,000) bundles liability insurance only — J-1 health insurance is billed separately at $98 – $136 / month.

If the U.S. consulate denies your J-1 with no violation on your side and the DS-2019 is returned to the sponsor, we refund €600 of the programme fee on 2–6 month placements and €700 on 7–12 month placements. Government fees paid to the U.S. authorities (SEVIS $220, DS-160 $185) are not refundable by us.

No. Once the host placement is confirmed and accepted, the participant is obliged to complete the programme payment — matching, sponsor liaison and DS-7002 drafting have already been delivered — and any balance already paid is retained. Substitute participants are not allowed, as each J-1 placement is personalised to the candidate's CV, field and host interview. Violation of the programme's terms and conditions can also lead to the placement being cancelled by Piktalent without a refund.

J-1 Intern: current university students or graduates within 12 months of graduation, placed in a field directly related to their degree. J-1 Trainee: a degree plus 1 year of related work experience, OR 5 years of relevant professional experience without a degree. Both require sufficient English to function in the U.S. workplace and proof of strong ties to the home country.

Plan 8–14 weeks from host match to U.S. arrival: 2–4 weeks for the sponsor to approve DS-7002 and issue DS-2019, then SEVIS I-901 payment, DS-160 submission, and a U.S. embassy interview slot (1–6 weeks depending on country). Some J-1 categories — especially when the program is government-funded or the field appears on the Exchange Visitor Skills List for your country — require you to return home for two years before applying for an H-1B, L-1, or U.S. permanent residency. A waiver is sometimes possible. Your DS-2019 and consular stamp will indicate whether 212(e) applies; we flag it during onboarding before you commit.

Yes. J-1 Intern and Trainee placements must be paid at or above the U.S. federal or applicable state minimum wage and follow the Fair Labor Standards Act, under a written Training / Internship Plan (DS-7002). Stipends are common for research roles; au pairs receive a weekly stipend plus room, board and an education allowance.

Yes — they apply for J-2 dependent visas. J-2 spouses can request a USCIS work-authorization (EAD) after arrival in the U.S. J-2 children attend U.S. K-12 schools. The J-1 sponsor adds J-2 dependents to your DS-2019 before the embassy interview.
