How American students intern in Europe
US passport holders travel visa-free in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days (ETIAS online authorisation from mid-2025). We don't sell standalone visa services — this is free reference information for US passport holders planning a European placement. Piktalent handles the visa paperwork as part of every city package. Americans going to Europe do not use a J-1: that's a U.S.-issued visa for non-US citizens going to the United States.
Short stays (under 90 days)
US passport holders enter the Schengen Area visa-free for tourism, language courses, or short unpaid internships. From mid-2025 you'll need an ETIAS travel authorization (≈€7, valid 3 years). It's an online form, not a visa.
Long-stay national visas (90+ days)
Country-specific student or intern visas — France VLS-TS, Spain estancia por estudios, Germany §16b, Ireland Stamp 1A. We prepare the host agreement, proof of accommodation, and the financial statements each consulate requires.
UK Student Route & Temporary Worker
Post-Brexit the UK runs its own system. Short internships use the Standard Visitor exception; longer placements need a sponsored route. We confirm eligibility before you apply.

Do US students need a visa to intern in Europe?
For internships under 90 days in any Schengen country, US passport holders enter visa-free (ETIAS authorization required from mid-2025). For placements over 90 days, a national long-stay student or intern visa is required. The UK and Ireland have separate routes.
I have a US passport — do I need a J-1 visa for Europe?
No. The J-1 is a U.S.-issued Exchange Visitor visa for non-U.S. citizens coming to the United States. American students going to Europe travel visa-free in Schengen for under 90 days, or apply for the host country's national intern/student visa (Spain, France, Germany, Italy, etc.). How much does an internship in Europe cost an American student?

How far in advance should I apply?
