How to Apply for Spanish Social Security Number

There are two ways to apply for a Social Security number in Spain: online and in-person.

Look for the drop-down menu and choose “Solicitar número de la Seguridad Social”. Before starting, make sure to have a digital certificate, so that you can sign any online documents required. In-Person Application

If you prefer to apply in person, you can do so at your nearest Tesorería de la Seguridad Social. You’ll need to make an appointment first (cita previa). You can find your nearest office here

      • Download and fill out FORM TA-1:
        This is the application form for the Social Security Number.
      • Form and Required Documents:
        You’ll need to present the TA-1 form along with your ID or passport, your TIE or physical residency card in which your NIE number appears, and your employment or internship contract.
        If you have a digital certificate, you can submit these documents through the submission link. 
      • Visit the Social Security Office:
        On the day of your appointment (cita previa) bring the same documents as mentioned above and your Social Security number will be issued at that very moment.
        Bear in mind that most likely, no worker there will speak English, so it might be helpful to bring someone who can translate for you.
