TELUS International is looking for Appalachian English Linguists for an English Transcreation and Annotation project.

Task description: the task is a two-step process including transcreation and annotation, depending on the availability, the linguist will be assigned to only one step of the process.

Transcreation phase: transcreate given texts into Appalachian English. Please note that the source will be in English. The sentence (about 10 words) or passage (about 40-50 words) should be transcreated in a way that’s most natural for a native speaker of Appalachian English.

Annotation phase: take prompts and outputs in Appalachian English and annotate them based on a series of questions aimed to measure responsiveness.

For example, in US versus UK standard English there are many examples of lexical differences (lorry vs truck; rubbish vs garbage, etc), but it does require some thought to introduce syntactical structure:

In the US, the answer to “Did Frank love it?” is “He must have”; in the UK is “He must have done”.

US: “the film was very good” vs UK: “the film was well good”

UK: “The New York Red Bulls are an American Soccer team”; UK: “FC Red Bull Salzburg is an Austrian association football club”.
