Who can apply for a J-1 Extension?
- Interns who have not yet reached the 12-month maximum duration
- Trainees who remain within the 18-month program limit
- Participants whose host company agrees to continue the training
- Candidates whose sponsor approves the updated training plan
- Applicants who request the extension before the DS-2019 expiration date
J-1 Intern Extension
Interns may request an extension only if they have not completed the maximum 12-month period. The extension must support continued learning and cannot replace regular employment.Maximum duration: up to 12 months total.
J-1 Trainee Extension
Trainees can extend their program as long as the total duration does not exceed 18 months. The extension must add new training objectives and responsibilities.Maximum duration: up to 18 months total.
